I'd like to lay the groundwork for others to join Reticulum in my city (in Italy, of it's relevant) by building and planting LoRa and/or HaLow nodes to cover as much of it as possible. This means setting them up away from my home, so how can I ensure they stay up?

If I put them in an unguarded location or outside of private property, others could steal them; if I want to put them in a protected location, this either means convincing total strangers to let me set them up (few of the friends I have live at the top floors of buildings or other places overlooking the city) or setting them up without the owner's knowledge: obviously I don't want to do anything illegal, and even if I didn't have this compunction an abusive node is sure to be destroyed once found by the owner of its' location.

I'd love to be informed that I'm worrying over nothing, but hearing from people who have already built some infrastructure how they solved this conundrum would be nice.

A little controversial opinion, but I think the network will grow naturally by itself if only people will find a use for it. Like, some might say: "What's the point of using LoRa if there is a TCP/IP option?". So, that's being said, my opinion is that you don't need to force yourself to be a host and take responsibility for maintenance of a transport node if your goal is a mere propagation (or an agitation/agiotage, sry for my English). Otherwise, if I wanted to handle infrastructure myself, I would consider additional costs to cover potential risks: like money, time for maintenance and maybe some legal aspects into account.

I want to build this infrastructure as a signal to any future enthusiasts in my area: you are not alone: there is a community and a framework waiting to welcome you.

The obvious use is escaping Chat Control and the EU Digital ID.
